10 Students Selected for MMRI Summer Scholarship Program
UTICA – The Masonic Institute for Medical Research, 2150 Bleecker St., has announced the start of its summer scholarship program for 2022, welcoming 10 individuals who represent colleges and universities across the state.
“We are delighted to have these talented students with us at MMRI this year, each of whom was selected for their scientific prowess and curiosity. This year has been particularly competitive, as we received 49 applications from highly qualified individuals, the highest number of applications received in our 64-year history,” said Dr. Khanh Ha, Coordinator of the Predoctoral Research Program and Postdoctoral Affairs .
The students enrolled in this year’s program are:
- Yashi Agarwal, Aaron Farley, Yuriy Milobog, and Catherine Hagearty-Mattern of SUNY Polytechnic Institute;
- Sandy Thai, of Hamilton College;
- Dominick Lomonaco and Anna Burkhartzmeyer of the Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences;
- Ryan Soron and Gianna Sisti of Binghamton University; and
- Hannah Bochniak of Hartwick College.
The scholarship program is a hallmark of MMRI’s dedication to education and training, the announcement said, adding that the 10-week program immerses undergraduate, graduate and medical students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) projects, offering students the opportunity to immerse themselves in cutting-edge research. Each student is paired with a senior scientist from the institute and works together to design a science project that complements both the interests of the student and those of the lab. The program started on May 20 and will end on July 29.
“Over the years, the summer scholarship program has been very successful; its summer fellows have gone on to become scientists, clinicians or professionals in fields related to business or medicine,” the MMRI announcement said, adding that “success could not be possible without the generous support of our local sponsors.
