How Gifted College Courses Impacted High School Graduates 2020

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – What impact did offers of a free college tuition have on high school graduates in 2020?

We told you how the McClure Foundation offered a free Community College of Vermont course to all 2020 graduates.

The goal was to give more opportunities to senior graduates whose senior year of high school was overshadowed by the pandemic.

According to CCV, 600 graduate seniors accepted the foundation’s offer, doubling CCV’s enrollment this fall.

“Clearly, we saw every difference. When we made it easy and affordable, more and more Vermonters invested in themselves and continued their education,” said CCV President Joyce Judy.

Judy also says removing financial barriers to college could help solve Vermont’s labor issues, since many jobs require at least some post-secondary education.

While Vermont has one of the highest graduation rates, she says it has one of the lowest college attendance rates. She believes the cost of higher education is an important factor.
