Outstanding Barnsley College students celebrated at College’s Excellence Awards – FE News

Students from Barnsley College, Barnsley Sixth Form College and Barnsley College Higher Education have been recognized for their outstanding achievement at the annual Achievement Awards.

The awards ceremony saw the presentation of 21 awards, including the Achievement Award, Apprentice of the Year, Enterprise, Equality and Diversity, Jeff Townend Memorial, Outstanding Commentary from a Employer (Work Placement), Overcoming Adversity, Progression Award, Corporations Award, Corporation of the Year, Student of the Year, Student Voice Representative, Employer Engagement from Talent United, the Tutorial Award, and the Principal Award.

During the evening, the Principal’s Award was given to a student selected from among those who won an award during the evening and this year’s winner was Ellie Woodhall. Ellie, who is a Childcare T Level student, also won the Excellence Award and impressed the judges with her commitment and dedication. She became an outstanding ambassador for T Levels, consistently meeting her deadlines and always acting on feedback. After applying for an internship in a particularly difficult environment, she took up the challenge and proved to be an exceptional practitioner.

Ellie said: “I am so happy to have been named the winner of the Achievement Award and the Principal’s Award. I really enjoyed my time at the College and look forward to taking the next step at university.

Guests enjoyed a two-course meal, prepared by Glorious Catering, at the sponsored event and were entertained by students from Barnsley College’s dance and musical theater department, with special guest British comedian, actor and radio presenter, Toby Foster, who hosted the event.

The keynote speaker for the evening was South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, who works with young people in Barnsley and is currently chairman of the board of Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union. He gave an impassioned speech about ambition and encouraged students to be proud of their roots.

Yiannis Koursis OBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Barnsley College, added:

“The Excellence Awards are always one of the highlights of the year and they are more special than ever this year after we were recognized as outstanding by Ofsted.

“It is thanks to the kind support of our sponsors that the event is made possible and it is a fantastic way to celebrate the incredible achievements of our students. I am extremely proud to be the principal of such a dynamic and exceptional College and this ceremony pays a deserved tribute to these students who surpass themselves in their studies and in the life of the College.

The event was supported by many local and national businesses including Barnsley Chronicle, Masonite, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Barnsley Civic, Barnsley Hospital, GXO Logistics, Evri, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, Barnsley Museums, Barnsley Premier Leisure, Software House International (SHI) and Barnsley Football Club.
